Obituary

Bettye Ellis, 92, passed away Monday morning, February 24, 2020. A graveside service is planned for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Quanah Memorial Park. Rev. Stephen White will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m., Tuesday, February 25 th at Smith Funeral Home.

Bettye Frances Tawwater was born September 11, 1927, in Floydada, Texas, to Sim Nolan and Minnie Zee (Brisco) Tawwater. She married Vernon Ellis on March 4, 1946 in Quanah, Texas. Together, they raised two children. She was a resident of Quanah most of her life, where she worked in retail sales; as a telephone operator; and at the Palace Theater. Bettye was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and served as President of W.S.C.S., and on the building committee. She was an avid reader and loved to fish.

She is survived by her husband Vernon Ellis of Quanah; daughter, Bettina Wade of Quanah; son, Greg Ellis of Vernon; 3 grandchildren, Jim Wade of Nome, Alaska, Randy Wade of Lubbock, and Coulter Ellis of Wichita Falls; and 1 great granddaughter, Dixie Ellis of Wichita Falls.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Woodrow, Sim Nathan, Tut, and Billy Tawwater; and sisters, Wana Richardson, Wilma Swindell, and Clara Tawwater.

The family suggests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Quanah, P.O. Box 397, Quanah, Texas 79252.
