Obituary

Charles Welton Lumpkin of Quanah passed away January 4 th , 2022 at Hardeman County Memorial Hospital at the age of 91. Charles was born August 19 th , 1930 to C.L. and Myrtis Lumpkin on the Ross Ranch in far western Hardeman County.  He married the love of his life, Joretta White, on April 2 nd , 1949 in Wellington Texas.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 7, 2022 at Goodlett Reformed Baptist Church. Rev. Monte Lumpkin will officiate. Interment will follow at Goodlett Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Thursday evening at Smith Funeral Home in Quanah.

Charles farmed, and also worked at Preston Leonard Texaco, and Quisenberry Texaco in Goodlett.  For 20 years he operated the Goodlett Gym and skating rink where hundreds of local youth came to skate and make memories.

Charles was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and earned an expert marksman badge in the Army. In his younger days he loved to fish and quail hunt. He was also known to spin a tale or two to anyone who would listen. He was a good guitar player and loved bluegrass music.  He was a man of simple pleasures and a man who worked hard to take care of his family. He loved to hand out Werther's candies to make people smile and keep them happy for 15 minutes and 32 seconds.

Charles is survived by a son, Monte Lumpkin, and wife Susan of Quanah.  Two granddaughters, Shvonne Ray, and husband Trevor of Goodlett, and Nicki Lumpkin of Lubbock. Charles is also survived by a sister, Melba Baker, of Elk City, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joretta, three brothers, J.D. Lumpkin, Everett Lumpkin, and Otis Lumpkin.  He loved going to church and he loved his friends.  He was a member of Goodlett Reformed Baptist.  Memorials can be made to Goodlett Reformed Baptist Church or the Goodlett Cemetery Association.
