Clark "Red" Burkett, 94, of Quanah, passed away Friday evening, November 6, 2020 in Crowell.  A graveside service is planned for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 10 ^th at Quanah Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m., Monday, November 9 ^th at Smith Funeral Home.

Clark Burkett was born November 3, 1926 in Boswell, Oklahoma to Ernest and Sarah Jane (Clark) Burkett. He was drafted during World War II into the U.S. Navy.  While in the Navy, he was an Amphibious Duck operator, and earned the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Victory Medal. Red finished high school after he was discharged in 1946. He married Bobbie Jane Williams on September 9, 1949 in Vernon, Texas.  Together, they raised one daughter, Elizabeth, or "Scooter" as he affectionately nicknamed her. Red owned and operated Red's Drive-In in Vernon for several years before moving to Quanah in 1965. In Quanah, he owned and operated the Dairy Queen until 1978. He moved to Chillicothe and operated Red's Dry Cleaners until 1985. After returning to Quanah, he repurchased the Dairy Queen, and operated it as Red's Drive-In until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, the QISD School Board, served as the Mayor of Quanah in the 1970's, and was a member of the Quanah Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth "Scooter" Mayfield, and husband, Billy of Quanah; 2 granddaughters, Marenda Horton, and husband Thomas, of Caldwell, Texas, and Marcy Mayfield and Bernard Milton of Carrollton, Texas; 3 great grandchildren, Ian Horton, and wife Katelynn, of Lubbock, Grayson Dougherty of Carrollton, Texas, and Maggie Horton of Caldwell; a brother, Otis Ray Burkett, and wife Bobbie, of Burleson, Texas; and a brother in law, Dee Williams, and wife Myrt, of Eldorado, Texas. In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie, on July 26, 2007; and several brothers and sisters.

The family suggests memorials be made to Crowell Nursing Center or Hospice of Wichita Falls.
