Obituary

Helen Joyce "Snookie" Chapman died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. She was 89.

Snookie was born on January 3, 1929, to Escus and Hattie (Toland) Jackson, in Roaring Springs, Texas. She and James Chapman were married on April 18, 1948 in Quanah.  Together, they raised two children, Carolyn and Jerry.

She retired from Security Bank after working there for 30 years. Snookie worked as the Quanah City Secretary/Administrator from 1985-1989, and finally retired from Chapman-Wilson Insurance in 2009. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  She never missed a function or sports event for her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.  She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church, and had requests for her macaroni and cheese at every funeral and food function.  Snookie served on multiple boards throughout her career - Quanah Country Club President and Board Member, for several years; QCC Ladies Golf Association, and President, and was known for promoting the building of the gazebo and memorial garden.  She was on the original board for the QHS Alumni Association, and remained active for many years.

She had a great love for the game of golf. She met many wonderful friends through golf, and played in every tournament she could find.  She enjoyed playing with friends and family.

Snookies' mother was a 5 Star Mother during World War II. While the 5 brothers and 2 brother-in-laws were serving, Snookie, her mother, father, and sister, were left to work the farm.

Snookie is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Wilson and husband, Dink, of Quanah; a son, Jerry Chapman, and wife, Joy, of Mineral Wells; 2 grandsons, Toby Wilson, and wife, Rhonda; and Kevin Beam, and wife, Heather; a sister in law, Dorothy Jackson, of Selado, Texas; 7 great grandchildren, Garrett Beam, Gage Beam, Esaie Beam, Dana Beam, Tatum Tippett, Weston Wilson, and Avery Wilson.

She was predeceased by her husband, James, in 1985; 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Quanah Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home. Rev. Josh Crown and Rev.
