Obituary

Melba Jones, 88, of Quanah, passed away early Monday morning, January 31, 2022 in Vernon, Texas. A funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 5 th at the First Baptist Church in Quanah. Rev. Ronnie Shoffner and Dr. David Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Quanah Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m., Friday, February 4 th at Smith Funeral Home.

Melba Dean Jenkins was born March 5, 1933 to the late Jeff Jenkins and Oda Stroope Jenkins in Bonnerdale, Arkansas. She married Charles O. Jones, Jr. on September 23, 1956 in Big Spring, Texas and they moved to Quanah in 1963.  They raised three children in Quanah, and were members of the First Baptist Church. She loved her family and was an avid reader.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Tory Beachy, and husband Dan of Quanah, and Delores Gay Smith of Wichita Falls; 1 son, Jim Jones of New Orleans, Louisiana; 4 grandsons, Cameron Smith, and wife Erin, Jacob Stark, Craig Jones, and Clark Jones; 4 great grandchildren, Jolie and Emmie Smith, and Seth and Elijah Jones.  She was preceded in death by her husband, C.O. Jones, in 2011, and a son, Leslie Jones.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Thompson-Sawyer Public Library, 403 W. 3 rd St., Quanah, Texas 79252.
